Another Facet

In addition to being a crackerjack pianist, Mitch Woods is versatile and eclectic. Since this native New Yorker moved to the West Coast over 30 years ago, he has becomes steeped in the traditions of West Coast Swing, Kansas City boogie woogie, New Orleans gumbo and Cajun, and Chicago electric Blues. He has played with many of the Blues greats and his albums reflect his wide-ranging tastes and encounters. Keeper of the Flame in 1997 featured rollicking duets with such luminaries as John Lee Hooker, James Cotton, and Earl King. His 2006 album Big Easy Boogie was a tribute to the battered but vibrant city of New Orleans, his spiritual second home, and deployed many of the Crescent City's best Blues musicians.

Jukebox Drive presents another facet of Woods' range. Recorded in, of all places, that hotbed of the Blues, Spain, and graced with a quartet of hot Spanish players, it presents Woods in his full-tilt boogie glory. Of the 12 cuts, at least half are pedal-to-the-metal and fingers-to-the-ivories barn raisers. If you want to have a dance party, bring this CD with you! Highlights include "Boppin' the Boogie," "Saturday Night Boogie Woogie Man," and "Swell Lookin' Babe," all composed by Woods and all conjuring up memories not only of the traditions mentioned above, but also 1940's horn-abetted Swing and 1950's Rock 'n' Roll. The album concludes with "Mitch's Boogie," an instrumental showcasing his pianistic prowess and propulsive drive.

There are also a few surprises with admirable covers of the Professor Longhair classic tune "Tipitina," John Lee Hooker's "Boom Boom," and Mose Allison's "Parchman Farm." Instead of imitating the originals, an intimidating challenge probably doomed to failure, Woods adapts them to his strengths and they sound terrific.

Perhaps the most notable aspect of Jukebox Drive is Woods' singing. Never remarkable on past discs, on this one it is fine and although his range is limited Woods growls and croons convincingly and sounds great.

MITCH WOODS WITH THE LAZY JUMPERS - JUKEBOX DRIVE

It was during on of his European tours that Mitch Woods stopped by
Barcelona city to team up with Spanish Jump Blues aces The Lazy Jumpers
and record the 12 tracks of Jukebox Drive for El Toro Records.

RETRO MUSIC REVIEW

Mitch Woods - Jukebox Drive (El Toro Rhythm & Blues; El Toro R&B 206)
reviewed by Michael Macomber

Whether "Boppin' The Boogie" or serving up burgers at a
"Boogie Woogie Bar-B-Q," piano man Mitch Woods
is the epitome of cool. He rocks those eighty-eights like crazy
as a "Saturday Night Boogie Man," then stumbles in the next
morning with a "Blues Hangover." The latter track is a thrilling
rhythm and blues masterpiece, thanks in no small part to Woods'
first class backing band, The Lazy Jumpers. Drummer Blas Picon
not only drives the tune furiously, he also delivers a killer harmonica break.

Bassist Ivan Kovacevic provides the perfect thumping sway for the more
easygoing "Blue Light Boogie," and sax man Dani Perez contributes a
brilliant strip-club solo. Guitarist Mario Cobo shines on a heart pounding
rendition of John Lee Hooker's "Boom Boom." Perez and his sax take
the Jerry Lee Lewis style rave up "Swell Lookin' Babe" to unbelievable
heights. Woods shows his vocal versatility on this one, morphing from
a broad voiced bluesman into a shouting 1955 rocker.

The cherry in this 12-song set is the self-titled original, "Mitch's Boogie."
Here, Woods gets to demonstrate his impeccable piano skills, to the
great benefit of the listener. With seeming ease, Woods makes
those keys swing, sway, and dance the night away. Amazing

Style : Blues
Rate (1-5) :

In the last twenty years Mitch Woods has been working on re-discovering the heritage of the great American Rock and Roll scene. Listening and performing the music that gave birth to Rock and Roll, Mitch Woods is a talented piano player who takes his inspiration from the great jump n' boogie outfits of the late 40s and early 50s.

Together with he Spanish Lazy Jumpers Mitch Woods recorded twelve jump blues & boogie woogie tunes that reminds me so much of the original scene. Think Louis Jordan, Wynonie Harris, Joe and Jimmy Liggins, Amos Milburn and Roy Milton and you have a pretty good idea of what I mean. Add to that some great blues sounds from the Lazy Jumpers en the picture is complete.

"Boppin' the Boogie" is a great tune that makes every cat swing but on it is "Saturday night Boogie Woogie Man" Mitch let the piano roll for sure. Bopping piano music leads you to real ecstasy. And the party isn't over yet! "Blues Hangover" leaves the beaten path of the swing sound and moves into blues territory with a cool R&B sound! It's Big Band swing time at the "Boogie Woogie Bar-B-Q". A truthful tune about Texas women and Bar-B-Q's! The Lone Star state rules in this tune! Well as long as we stay in meat department everything is Ok for me. Among the many covers on this album one can also find the John Lee Hooker tune "Boom Boom". This rendition of the great blues song works fine for me but personally I do appreciate more the other covers on the album. Take for instance the Roy Bird tune, "Tipitina". That one certainly hits the spot! A great voice and sound all packed together on this one album what more can you wish for.

In twelve tracks Mitch Woods & the Lazy Jumpers, create a sound that is truly inspiring for many bands who dig something else then the usual three chord progressions. But not only musicians are invited to listen to this album. Hell no this is for everyone with a taste for old-time music, swing and blues. Go check them out now!
